5 Reasons Digital Planning is Better than Paper Planning
If you’ve been toying around with the idea of switching to digital planning, I wanted to make sure you had some educated reasons for doing so.
There is a multitude of reasons why one way might be better than the other. Since we focus on digital planning here at Holly Pixels, I wanted to give you reasons to go digital with your iPad.
What is Digital Planning?
If you’re really new here, you may not even know what digital planning is. But to understand it, I need to first talk about how creatives use their planners.
This isn’t your 80s Franklin Covey way of documenting your time.
Many creatives found that adorning their planner pages with stickers and embellishments helped them make their calendars feel pretty while staying organized at the same time.
Walk into any chain craft store (i.e., Michaels or Hobby Lobby), and you’ll find aisles dedicated to this fun way of planning.
It’s a trendy creative outlet.
Digital planning is the same thing but done on your iPad (or tablet). Instead of printing the planner onto paper and binding it into a book, we PDF it. We print to a digital file vs. paper.
Our signature digital planner is called a Pixel Planner. We design ours undated but with hyperlinked tabs to make it easy to flip through your planner.
Stickers are like photos. You can drag and drop them around on your pages and easily resize them. You’re achieving the same results as creative paper planners do.
What are 5 Reasons Digital Planning is Better than Paper Planning?
Digital planning is better because it is more cost-effective than paper planning. This is a big one for a lot of people. Paper planners can run you up to $60+, and it’s only good for one year.
You can find a pre-designed PDF planner to insert into your note-taking app choice for around $15 (average) with digital. The beauty is that many of them come undated, so you can use the planner year after year if you wish.
And, since the stickers are digital PNG files, you can use them again and again. Once you use a paper sticker book up, that’s it. Gone, gotta buy another set.
Note-taking apps generally run around $10, and it’s a one-time purchase. So if you buy a $15 digital planner and GoodNotes, you’re still already paying less than a paper planner. Even if it’s dated and you have to buy a new planner the following year.
2. Easy To Change Plans
Digital planning is better because it’s easy to make changes.
Have you ever written in your paper planner with a pen that wasn’t erasable? And, your plans change? With digital, it’s a clean change.
You don’t ruin the paper or have to cover something up with a sticker. You delete or move/copy to a new location.
If you realized later you wished you had used a different pen color, that’s easy to change after you typed it out or written it down.
Digital planning is better because it’s more portable than a paper planner. How do I mean?
Let’s say you have multiple planners for different areas of life. Maybe you have a work planner and a student planner? Or even more?
Carrying those around can weigh down your bag fast, which isn’t good for your shoulders.
With digital planning, it’s all kept in one device, making it easy to carry with you.
And, all of your supplies are stored on the device as well. This saves you tons of space.
4. Environmentally Friendly
Digital planning is so much more environmentally friendly. That makes digital planning better!
- No paper waste
- No printer ink waste
- Reusing the same planner or stickers over and over reduces waste as well.
5. Easy to Share
Do you ever find you need to share your calendar with someone? With digital planning, you can, easily.
With apps like GoodNotes, you can create a shareable URL to a document that you both can access and edit together. No need to pass the document around.
Try that with your paper planner!
So, Will, You Switch from Paper Planning to Digital Planning?
Ultimately, the type of planner you keep is your personal preference. And, for me, digital has worked out best.
If you have considered the switch, I hope these reasons give you some encouragement to do just that. And, we’d welcome you here at Holly Pixels!
